In 1997,Ms Wendy Liang, the latest exponent of a long line of educators in the family, founded the Beijing Chinese School in New York. 2004 marks the school?|s advent to the seventh year of its founding. The school, numbering several hundred students, is a non-profit organization of continuing education registered by the New York State Department of Education.

The Beijing Chinese School specializes in teaching Chinese in the internationally recognized pin yin system of phonetics, in the simplified style of writing (while also teaching classical Chinese writing), and in standard common speech, or putonghua (Mandarin). This is complemented by a varied schedule of music, painting and dance, as well as after-school tutoring and summer school. Its goal is to foster bilingual English-Chinese talent to serve mainstream U.S. society. American children of Chinese descent and adults interested in learning Chinese and the Chinese culture, will not only learn the language but also a rich cross-section of the Chinese civilization, past and present. This will help them to know both East and West and acquire a global view.

First, rate teachers and top-notch quality ?V these are the primary strengths of the Beijing Chinese School.

The Chinese curriculum is based on the set of excellent teaching materials designed by Jinan University of China comprising 12 textbooks under the name?¡ìChinese?¡§. This is a highly systematic and efficient system of teaching practical Chinese in a fairly concentrated way. Correspondingly, the school holds three semesters a year of intensive learning. It offers different curricula for different grades, starting from pre-kindergarteners as young as 4 years old through high school and beyond. One-on-one studies and special education course in Chinese are also offered. Enrollment and admission are on a rolling basis so that students can join in at different times of the year. Teachers are experienced, love their students, and have a strong sense of responsibility.

Weekend music, painting, dance and other classes in the arts, taught in Chinese, not only develop the wide-ranging artistic talents and interests of children, but also coordinate with the Chinese classes to enhance students?| Chinese speaking and listening ability. Through these classes, students have the opportunity to become acquainted with the rich Chinese heritage and culture in a natural setting.

Annually in March and November, the Beijing Chinese School organizes its students to participate in a simulation SAT II exam in the Chinese language and a simulation Han Language Level Test (HSK) ?V a test designed by the Ministry of Education of the People?|s Republic of China to evaluate the level of Chinese attained by foreign students learning Chinese (popularly dubbed the ?¡ìChinese TOEFL?¡§).

Students receiving outstanding scores in the latter are eligible for full Chinese government scholarships and summer school studies in China. Weekend English and math classes are taught by licensed public school teachers. These focus on children from new immigrant families and/or with learning difficulties for studying in public schools. Classes are small and results are remarkable.

After-school tutoring classes from Monday to Friday are a necessary supplement to public school day classes. Here students can finish their homework under supervision and cultivate fine studying habits. This is one of the school?|s most popular features with parents, who are happy and relieved to leave their children in such good hands.

Another major goal of the Beijing Chinese School is to acquaint students with a bilingual environment. Its summer bilingual programs are targeted to this goal. Morning English and math classes are taught by experienced teachers from public schools whose first language is English, providing a full English-speaking environment. Afternoon Chinese classes are taught by Chinese-speaking teachers in a purely Chinese environment. Under this reinforced bilingual training, student?|s proficiency in both languages rise quickly. At the same time, as the English and math courses are closely geared to public school courses, a summer?|s review and preparatory work do wonders for student when they return to school in September. Bilingual summer school is another feature parents like best.

The Chinese tradition ?¡ìto study ten thousand volumes of books and travel ten thousand miles?¡§ points out two indispensable pathways to knowledge. The Beijing Chinese School also organizes frequent studies and tours in China during the summer. The students are given the opportunity to visit the beautiful sites and scenes of the Chinese land, hold get-togethers with Chinese students and engage in a variety of other interesting activities, thus getting life experience which no books can teach.

In learning Chinese, the school emphasizes all-round listening, speaking and reading ability with the focus on quality. Intermediate-level students can start reading Chinese reading materials while higher-level students can publish pieces in the Chinese newspapers. The Beijing Chinese School is proud of the fact that the majority of its students have received outstanding results in the SAT II U.S. ?Vwide Chinese simulation exams and the HSK exams nationwide. Many students have won prizes in writing and recitation contests. After 6 years of diligent studies, the first classes of graduates have now completed their curriculum. The School demands graduates to qualify in all of the following four areas:

1.Completion of the 12 ?¡ìChinese ?¡§ textbooks and passing corresponding tests satisfactorily.

           2. Receiving a score of 700 or more (out of 800) in the SAT II Chinese simulation test.

3.Receiving a medium or higher score in the HSK exam, which is the Chinese Ministry of Education?|s evaluation test of foreign students in their knowledge of Chinese.

4.Publishing at least five pieces of writing in Chinese-Language newspapers or magazines.

Students complying with the four conditions above are approved for graduation from the Beijing Chinese School?|s elementary school and are granted diplomas. Those that fulfill at least two or more of the four conditions ate approved as associate graduates of the elementary school, and will be issued a diploma upon reaching all four criteria.

In the six years since its founding, the Beijing Chinese School, with the training of bilingual talent as its end, with diversified education as its means, backed up by excellent faculty and classroom material and ensuring credibility with fine teaching quality, has won the praise and support of society.
